The Cute Houdini

Just a quick Jesse story from this morning…

Beau and I both woke up at about 2:30am. I went to the bathroom (I think he did, too) and then he headed to the sofa downstairs to try to sleep while I got back into bed. I lay there for about an hour with my mind churning on the things to do at work, so I got up to write stuff down and ultimately went down to the computer to do some personal work things, as I said in my earlier post.

I came back up at about 6:30am to start getting ready for work, waking up Beau on the way. As I headed up the stairs I thought I heard Jesse making wake up noises in his room. When I got to the top, he called out for Daddy. Before I went to let him out of his room, I went into our room and immediately saw an open packet of Saltine crackers laid out on the recliner seat along with the in-ear thermometer - things laid on the end table next to the chair that hadn’t been put away after our family illness. I was stumped for a minute, because Jesse was behind the closed door in his room.

So I went to his door, opened it, and asked, “What’s up, Buddy?” He was bright-eyed (moreso than when we usually open the door first thing in the morning) and immediately said, “Crackers?” I laughed and called down to Beau to come to see what he was missing.

Turns out that Jesse has somehow gotten out of his room (we have one of those doorknob covers on the inside of his door to keep him locked in), gotten to the crackers and started to snack, and then went back into his room and closed the door. Because I was in the basement I couldn’t hear him. Beau clearly didn’t hear him while he was still asleep on the main floor.

By the time Beau made his way upstairs, Jesse was settled on the floor with the Saltines, munching happily. Too funny. And now we need to figure out what do to about our Houdini - we might need to put a high latch or chain on the front door to keep him in and other safety things that we haven’t thought about yet.

Adventures in parenthood.
