On TeeVee
I am one of many millions who takes perverse glee at this bit of news from the weekend. It’s 12 years too late and for the wrong crime, but hey, they got Capone on tax evasion so whatever it takes to get justice and all that.
Not too many years ago I would spend hours watching the red carpet shows of the Oscars and Emmys and then stay up way too late watching the bloated award shows themselves. No longer. I love my TV, but I don’t love the award shows anymore - the narcissism, the shallowness and hollowness of it all - not interested. I was flipping through the channels last night while holding a sleeping Jesse when I happened upon the Emmys at the moment when that chick from Grey’s Anatomy, which I don’t watch, won for best supporting actress. The camera cut to her after her name was announced and the first thing she said had to be bleeped. There she was, a beautiful blond in a gorgeous dress and sparkling gems, looking like an elegant and classy lady, but her mouth didn’t match the image. I flipped away, but ended up back again when the surfing rounds brought me back to that channel and I heard more bleeping and profanity that wasn’t bleeped. Nice. And then this morning I heard the clip of Sally Field’s rant, in which she also got bleeped, and I wonder what is wrong with people that the only words they can think of when they’re giving a speech on live television is profanity? And nevermind the politics. You’d think actors would get the clue that the average American doesn’t give a flying fig what they think about the war or the President or whatever in politics. Shut up and act or sing or whatever it is you do. I don’t care what you think about the war! Sheesh.
