Wedding Planning: Counseling and Caterers

Beau and I met with his pastor on Saturday for our first pre-marital counseling session. We walked in and his first question was, “Why are we doing this?” He chuckled and then said that he has never had a couple “as old as [us]” for pre-marital counseling. We agreed that we are not the norm in that respect. And we’re both mature Christians and have already talked through a lot of the issues that are covered in counseling. The upshot was that he doesn’t think we really need the full course of counseling that he would give to younger couples, but we will meet with him at least one more time anyway. It was a good meeting and I enjoyed getting to know the pastor a little better.

Mom and I met with our caterer yesterday afternoon to finalize the contract. She’s great and very accommodating to what we want. We talked about the logistics of the room, the cake, the rentals and now Mom and I have a better idea of what need to rent. I need to resend the picture of the cake and the recipe for the cake as well.

Making progress…

  1. Yes, you need pre-marital counseling!!  It doesn’t matter how old you are, how mature in Christ you are, how perfect you seem for each other.  Love puts on blinders and ignores red flags.  You need a counselor will ask the hard questions, even if you think you have already covered them.  This is too important of a commitment to enter into lightly.  I would encourage you to do the whole counseling program and to examine yourselves seriously.

  4. No worries! I’m a big proponent of pre-marital counseling. The thing is that Beau and I have been very intentional about the relationship from minute one - we’ve talked about pretty much all of the serious marital issues except maybe our child-rearing philosphies. But there’s time for that and I have a feeling we’re on the same page for the most part anyway - we have been on everything else.

God is in it, it’s clear.
