We Are Nerds … And Proud!

My 30 minute lunch break was spent with my boss and two deputies in the conference room. Our discussion? The intricacies and personalities of the Star Trek universe. Specifics covered:

1. Kirk v Picard - out of which it was determined that as a commander Kirk was actually terrible, albeit being a bold risk-taker. Picard is what made TNG the show that it was.

2. The breadth of the ST universe across all shows and movies.

3. While Khan was a good enemy/foil for Kirk, the Borg were far more interesting and compelling generally and the perfect foil for Picard.

4. Janeway had the most annoying voice.

5. DS9 stunk mainly because they never went anywhere - everyone came to the station. Boring.

6. Enterprise is surprisingly better than originally thought with repeated and consecutive viewings. It was determined that having to wait a week to watch the show made it harder to stick with it, but having a 6-7 episode DVD is much better.

We also briefly talked about the new Battlestar Galactica a bit.

  2. 1. Agree totally.
    2. Wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall.
    3. Generally disagree - with some caveats. See, the Borg were great until they decided they needed eye candy and brought in the Queen. BUT - even before that, there were definite limitations to the greatness of the Borg. And honestly, the fact that you had an internal rebellion (e.g. Hugh, et al.) could’ve made for some interesting dimension to an enemy who otherwise just seemed like a spaceborne anthill.
    4. Janeway rocks. Yes, her voice is slightly annoying...but it’s just so her. The rest of the ship, less the Doctor and perhaps Tuvoc, stank.
    5. Seriously? I don’t know if we can be friends anymore ;) DS9 was, hands down, the best ST out there. Purely BECAUSE they were stationary. They had a chance to develop characters and plot as opposed to canned plot of 1) fly into previously unknown but - HEY - Class M, who’d’a’thunk it! - planet. 2) Tick off natives. 2a) Captain gets busy with at least one native 3) Red/Yellow shirt dies 4) Settle problem with natives 5) Fly off to break the prime directive somewhere else.  Plus! With DS9, you got the Founders who definitely are my pick for the best bad guys, AND you got Garrick (and the rest of the Cardassians...) seriously, you can’t beat DS9.
    6. Provided you could get over wanting to hear the captain say, “Oh boy!” everytime they found a problem, it was ok. It had a lot of potential, but the writing ruined it. However, Trip was awesome and I’m glad to see him on SG Atlantis (where he rocks).

7 - though you didn’t have a 7, did it come up that the best character in every series, minus TNG, has been the doctor? Think about it. :)

  3. I will NOT have you dissing my beloved Seven like that! Mmmmmmm, catsuited Borg…

I also really enjoy the various “meta” books out there about the philosophy and so forth of Star Trek. One to get is about the biology of Star Trek, what they get right and what they get wrong. It’s by Athena ICan’tRememberHerLastNameButIt’sGreek.

  4. I get what y’all are saying about DS9. I stand by my position - I hated it. Sue me.
