Unnecessary Quote Spotted

On my commute I spotted an unnecessary quote on a minivan. I didn’t have my camera, so no picture.

In Loving Memory
of
“D---- A-----------”

Now the sentiment caught my eye because I recognized the name. The man lovingly remembered was a member of my former church and died of cancer last year. Then I spotted the quote marks around his name.

Why?

  1. Sad, isn’t it?

My own step-mother sent a sympathy card when we lost Smokey, who was a “great” dog according to her.  I still haven’t completely forgiven her. grin

  2. Heh.

I just don’t get it. It’s not like the man wasn’t real. That is his name. No quote marks needed.

  3. Gwynne, at least he wasn’t a great “dog”...?

Jen, I think we should just “randomly” start “inserting” “quotes” into sentences and see if anyone “actually” notices.

  4. Hee-hee. I had an aunt who always signed her cards, “Love” Aunt B…

My sister and I still wonder how she really felt about us…

  5. “I” agree with “Gwynne.” Let “us” start using “quotes” to see if “anyone” “notices.” In our building there is a note on a refrigerator that it will be “cleaned” on Fridays.  I have always wondered exactly what they do (or don’t do).

  6. Misplaced quotation mark’s? Piker’s! I say we start overloading the world with grocer’s apostrophe’s and give the world dose’s of the medicine’s that they’ve inflicted upon us!

  7. Ahem. That should be “Sour’s” in the previous comment, by the way. I fail at failing. :-(

  8. You guys are hilarious.

    Apostrophe misuse is sad.

  9. Ok, I’m “calling” for a “total” solution. We do “both"--Use “misplaced” quotation “mark’s” and the “grocer’s” apostrophe’s in the “same” sentence’s.

What “say” you, peep’s???? (lot’s of question “mark’s” too!!!!! (and exclamation “mark’s")!!!!
