The First Hour Was Rough

Got a call from ECD with the first update on Annie’s retirement. They’ve had a rough go of it from the moment they drove up to the house.

1. ECD’s dog, Sassy, came barrelling out of their house on the attack and launched herself at Annie, grabbed her at the back of the neck and held on. This isn’t new and ECD said Annie fought back, but it wasn’t a good start. Sassy has been aggressive ever since.

2. Annie was exploring the backyard and got around the pool area. ECD figured she couldn’t miss the pool since it’s rather large and the next thing she knew Annie had gone over the edge. She waited a beat to see if Annie popped up to the surface and when that didn’t happen she dived, fully clothed, into the pool to get Annie who was sinking to the bottom.

3. She got Annie over the edge of the pool where Sassy attacked. Holly yelled at ECD to help get Sassy off of Annie, but she was now weighted down by her soaked clothes. They managed to get Annie free.

4. A little while after the pool event ECD put her out for a bit on a leash that was tethered to a table leg that the dog managed to get tangled around the legs of the trampoline.

Annie is terrified of the backyard and will not go out there. Can’t say I blame her - so many hazards encountered on that first afternoon. So ECD has been walking her out front.

I have a feeling Annie may return north if things don’t settle down in the next couple of weeks. Poor old girl. Poor ECD, too. She’s a trooper to take on an elderly dog.

  1. This would all be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad.  Poor Annie.  Sassy’s aggression is probably very intimidating and scary.  I hope things calm down in short order.

  2. We had a good chuckle about it. She felt terrible about the pool dive. Sassy was this way when we shared the house (before I got married) and things calmed down after a couple of weeks/months. I figure she’ll mellow out after she gets used to Annie on her turf again.

  3. Poor babies! And poor humans, too! Adjustments like this are tough - I hope it works out, too.  I suspect you’re right though, more than likely once they get used to each other again it’ll all be ok.
