The Cali Vacay Is Shaping Up

I’m starting to get excited about our California vacation next month. The week is shaping up nicely, with enough touristy things and visits with people to keep us happy and busy. Here’s how things are looking so far:

Saturday: Travel Day - it’ll be a wash even though we’re supposed to land at Burbank airport at about noon PST. We figure we’ll all be tired enough to want to just get to Beau’s uncle’s house (not far from Santa Barbara) to relax.

Sunday: We plan to go to church with Beau’s uncle in the morning. Then we’ll head back south to Simi Valley to try to meet up with CalTechGirl and her husband to tour the Reagan Presidential Library and then have dinner together if Jesse’s mood will allow it. Then back to Beau’s uncle for the night.

Monday: We’ll make the trip north to “home” with a stop at Solvang on the way. We’ll check into our hotel room and then probably go spend some time with Beau’s parents or other family that may be in town already.

Tuesday: Chill out with Beau’s parents for the day. Visit Morro Bay and surrounding scenic areas maybe. This is the night we have the dessert with family friends who want to meet me and Jesse. I think Beau’s brother and sister (and maybe their families) will be there, too.

Wednesday: Tour Cannery Row and the Aquarium in Monterey during the day and end with dinner with Ith. I owe Ith an email to confirm the date and plans.

Thursday: Tour Hearst Castle and then have dinner with our friend Barb. We owe an email to Barb to confirm the date/plans, too. Beau has known Barb for years. I have only known Barb via internet since I met and married Beau and I can’t wait to meet her in person!

Friday: The start of the family reunion. We have no clue of the specifics of the reunion weekend, so we’re keeping this day open to be available to Beau’s parents to help where we can.

Saturday: The reunion continues...all family all the time!

Sunday: We head back to the airport in Burbank for our red-eye flight home.

Should be a fun, nostalgic week for both of us. I’m looking forward to revisiting places that I haven’t seen since I lived in Monterey back in the early 1980s. Beau is looking forward to a visit with his parents and extended family. And I am looking forward to meeting the folks I have heard so much about and introducing them to one of the newest family members.

  1. No way I could be around my family for that number of consecutive hours.

  2. Aw. We’re blessed to both come from fantastic families. Not perfect, but loving and we all get along well together.

Beau joked that he survived a week-long vacation with his in-laws. I have a feeling I’ll do the same next month. We both feel that we have great in-laws.

  4. Sounds like a fun fun trip!  Hope it’s rejuvenating, not just busy.

  5. I am so jealous you’re going to Solvang! I haven’t seen that town in nearly 30 years. What a fun place!

  6. This sounds like a very full and fulfilling itinerary...like you said, a good balance of touristy, family and friends.  I will add only one stop to your plans...there’s this little rinky dink candy store (Crill’s) down on the Embarcadeo in Morro Bay that you must go to.  They make the best salt water taffy ever!  It’s next door to the Fish Shanty (not called this anymore) where I worked as a fry cook back in the olden days. grin

  7. Yeah Gwynne, I remember the saltwater taffy place.  I also thought we’d go by the shell shop and maybe have some fish and chips at Bob’s. Is it still there? ... been too long.

  8. I visited the Shell Shop also on my last trip out...even bought a few shells...it’s novelty is that it’s so stuck in the 1950’s that it’s actually charming now, in a shell collector sort of way.  I’m not sure if Bob’s is still there, but the fish and chips next door to Crill’s is good.  I mean, when all you do is fish and chips, the place doesn’t have to be very fancy to be good.

  9. Duh! That’s right, you used to live here. I swear my brain gets older and more forgetful every day.
