“So The Dog Will Live To See Another Day…”

If there’s one thing that has caused any discord in our fledgling marriage it is Annie-the-dog. I won’t go into the details, but let me say that this morning she was the catalyst for a period of stony silence between Beau and me that lasted for four lonely hours. At the end of that silence was a discussion that had two possible endings - Annie was going to the pound or we were going to buy a crate. We just got home from buying a crate.

Now, this is a small dog - she weighs about 30 lbs and stands only about 18” to maybe 2’ tall. However, we debated for several minutes over the medium crate (for dogs up to 70 lbs) or the large crate (for dogs 71-110 lbs). We bought the large crate because we want her to have plenty of space since she hates to be cooped up anyway.

So tonight we’ll see how she does in her new home for the night. What I know is that Beau and I shouldn’t have any more disagreements about Annie like we did this morning. The post title is what I said as we walked out of the PetSmart.

  1. I can’t believe that you would consider giving Annie away after having her so long!  Listen, if this comes up again, consider calling me - I’ll come get her and keep her.  That would be cruel to put her in a pound at her age - NO ONE would adopt her even though she’s cute.  I’ll take her.

  2. Neither of us really wanted to take her to the pound. We knew what the outcome was going be on that one. It was desperate talk in the middle of a dispute. I hated the idea, but was prepared to do it. But if we get to that point again, I’ll call you.

  3. Oh poor you and poor Beau! That’s a horrible situation for both of you. Having had to plead for pets for a year, I understand the marital discord that can come from something as “simple” as pet disagreements. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the crate does the trick!

  4. Excuse me for laughing, but 2 FEET tall?!?  I’ve seen the video and can’t imagine her being that tall.  She is way too cute.

Anyway, animals can cause strife like this, but the crate should work out eventually.  Dogs are actually burrow type animals anyway (especially Annie’s type) so with a little adjustment, she will probably look forward to nights tucked into the security of her own crate, especially as she loses her sense of hearing, etc.

  5. Gwynne’s observations are right on the money. Most dogs actually prefer crates that we humans would deem to be too small. Abbye sleeps in a crate at home that’s fairly large, but when we travel by car, we have a much smaller one, and she’s just as happy with it.

  6. One of the friends who helped us yesterday said the same thing. She used to be a dog trainer.

So we blocked off the back 1/3 of the crate with a towel that we clipped to the top with binder clips. Annie settled in and snoozed peacefully all night last night with no “accidents.”
