One Thing About The Beau
So our families are bemused that he has no TV and I watch a lot of TV.
You read that right, he does not own a television. Wrap your minds around that!
Opposites attract.
why is my submit codeword “hell?” That seems a little dark for this sunny place.
Posted by Bryan on 04/27/05 at 02:33 PMHmmm, interesting. I have no clue why that word is in the list at all.
Posted by on 04/27/05 at 02:35 PMHe doesn’t own a television?
What does he do with his life?
:D
Posted by kimberly on 04/27/05 at 02:44 PMWell, he is a teacher. He spends a lot of time working on class prep and grading papers and whatnot. And he’s active at his church. And then, of course, there’s the addition of me.
Posted by on 04/27/05 at 02:54 PMI’m still REALLY worried about this whole no-tv thing. I’ll have NOTHING to talk about with him when we meet. Doesn’t he know that our family enjoys craptastic tv and movies (Napoleon Dynamite notwithstanding)?
Posted by Jaynee on 04/27/05 at 02:58 PMHee. I think it’s funny.
Posted by princess jami on 04/27/05 at 03:06 PMHe’ll eventually be somewhat indoctrinated, I’m sure.
Posted by on 04/27/05 at 03:08 PMReminds me of an exchange from the sitcom “The Office” (NBC’s version, not the original):
Jim—Did you catch that show the other night?
Pam—No, I don’t watch television.
Jim—You don’t watch television?
Pam—No, I have a life.
Jim—Really? What’s that like?
Pam—It’s great, you should get one.
Jim—But then who will watch my TV?Posted by Jared on 04/27/05 at 03:12 PMFunny!
Here’s the thing - it sounds like I watch a lot of TV, but it’s really only an hour or two a day. After a 12-14 hour work/commute day, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have a little chill out time in my chair with the magic box on. A lot of the time I’m reading at the same time, too, or I try to.
Posted by on 04/27/05 at 03:17 PMBeau just emailed me - he’s highly amused by the comments.
Posted by on 04/27/05 at 03:54 PMI have a feeling Jen will lure him to the dark side. Her love of TV is strong. :D
Posted by kimberly on 04/27/05 at 04:24 PMI think I remember you hating Pulp Fiction, but still, I can’t help but think of this…
JULES: You know the shows on TV?
VINCENT: I don’t watch TV.
JULES: Yes, but...you ARE aware that there’s an invention called “television,” and that on this invention they show shows?
Posted by on 04/27/05 at 04:27 PMDoes not compute. Oh “Beau,” grading papers and watching TV go together naturally. Promise.
I guess this reduces the chances of future conflicts in what to watch.
Posted by Christopher on 04/27/05 at 04:54 PMHeh. When I met Jay, I had a TV that I’d use to watch a movie on occasionally, but which otherwise hadn’t been turned on since early in the war when I still had dialup and so didn’t read as many blogs and was impatient for news, even if it was from the MSM.
Thre are now several shows that I never miss an episode of and a few others on a “when I can catch them” basis.
Which isn’t to say you *will* corrupt him, but I was definitely surprised to find myself enjoying TV so much.
Posted by Deb on 04/27/05 at 05:20 PMHeh - I like him even more now! He’s a teacher and he has no use for the square-headed brain-vacuum.
j/k (about TV, not about liking the “Beau")
I’m sure you guys will find a TV watching balance that works for you.
You two crazy kids! I’m so excited!
Posted by Bill on 04/27/05 at 05:23 PMHey Beau - come over my way - I have a few questions for you.
Posted by Jaynee on 04/27/05 at 06:28 PMWow, I step away for a couple of hours and look what happens in the comments.
Dave - I actually liked Pulp Fiction and that quote is very funny.
I have a feeling that he’ll pick up a little Tv and I’ll watch a little less. Or I’ll just draw him to the dark side and he’ll get hooked.
Jaynee - I’ll as him if I can send you his email address. I’m emailing with his mother. He can email with you.
Posted by on 04/27/05 at 06:34 PMJen’s got a boyfriend. Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nahhhh.
What’s up with the missing TV? Are you allergic to mass media? How is Jen going to get her Fox News fix? Does this spell the end of the Republican? If she can’t get indoctrinated by Fox how will she keep up with the party? 24? Lost? American Idol? Amazing Race? The Beau’s are getting a TV. Without TV, she might start subscribing to the Washington Post and turn away from the dark side of the Force—or is Beau already a subscriber? So many questions?
Posted by denis on 04/27/05 at 10:31 PMSo what about the TV.
Way back when I got married I did not have cable and my TV was/is a historical relic that only got the broadcast channels. That TV was built in 1953 by the Spartan Corp of Jackson MI.
My wife has since been turned me to the dark side.
Posted by on 04/28/05 at 12:13 PMIf he doesnt have a TV he’s never gonna win Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Reason enough to end the relationship :P
When I was a child I knew a family that had one 12inch (maybe that big) B&W;TV in the parent’s bedroom which they used to watch the news now-and-then.
Of course they were also hippy veggies.
My dad sometimes thinks we should watch less TV as a family and do other things. It is a rare thought but when it happens all you gotta do is say the three magic words:
“Simpsons is on”Posted by Monjo on 04/29/05 at 09:23 AM
