Movies: Cloverfield

I was actually surprised that I didn’t have to wait for Cloverfield since it was just released to DVD this week.

I know that it got generally good reviews and IMDb shows a 7.7 out of 10 rating. I don’t get it.

We were really glad that we didn’t spend the money to see it in the theater - it would have been an expensive headache when you factor the price of the tickets and snacks and babysitter. At one point early on, Beau turned to me and said as much. I had to agree with him. I told him that folks had complained of leaving the theater with a headache and nausea after seeing Cloverfield. I can understand why. And it wasn’t just the reality-ish shakey camera work.

Ba-dum-dum. Thankyouverymuch, I’ll be here all week.

There are too many way to count the problems of this movie. In a word, it was painful - painful to watch, painful to endure, painful loss of time. I cannot recommend it. 0 stars.

[UPDATE]: Why I heart Roger Ebert.

  1. What killed the movie for me was that I just didn’t care about any of the characters. With no investment in the movie, I just… ech.

  6. OK, Ebert’s star rating does not match his review.

  7. Aw, I liked Cloverfield!  And I didn’t get nauseous at all watching it on the big screen.  Those people are wusses.

  8. It’s not a good movie when you’re laughing when people are dying and the intent is not to be humorous.

When Hud got it, we laughed that the others made sure to get the camera afterward. I mean, come on, are you going to go get a camera when you’ve seen your friend get eaten by some creature? Because I’m not.

  9. I did not see the film, but a friend of mine said this of the film:

“I defy anyone to see that movie and not end up rooting for the monster to continue improving the gene pool by killing off the incredibly stupid human characters.”
