This is just for the fall. 24, American Idol, and other shows will start up in January that will change this schedule. Not to mention the addition of my new husband at that point and the fact that he’s anti-TV.
Heh, not just “anti-TV” but sans TV. Will you still have a TV after you get married?
Beau’s “viewing” schedule might change if he’s unemployed. I’m envisioning him watching Days of Our Lives and Judge Judy while the kids take their nap.
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 11:54 AMUm, we will have a TV despite his attempts to convince me otherwise. I’ve told him that’s a non-negotiable. He’s coming around.
Actually, as he calls it, he’s getting sucked into the dark side.
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 12:02 PMAs of monday, I will have DishNework and a DVR/Tivo thingie that will record TWO! things at once!! [happy dance] More channels and the DVR for what I’m paying for Comcast. And no more trying to juggle recordings or getting my boss to tape that third show
Posted by Ith on 09/08/05 at 12:06 PMThe DVR rulz. I’m able to record two shows at once, but I can’t watch a third. It’s why I’ll need a second DVR to record one of the shows on Wed at 9pm. Or I go upstairs to watch LOST with my mother while the DVR I’m using records the two shows.
You will wonder how you ever got along without the DVR once you get attached to it.
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 12:10 PMI cannot wrap my head around the fact that anyone would not watch TV. It is physically impossible for me to accept.
I spent part of last night burning my episodes of Veronica Mars to video so I can clear the space off of TiVo. The new season is almost upon us. Thank goodness, because if I don’t have something else to watch soon then BB is gonna be the death of me. My blood pressure shoots up watching that show. If I could inflict bodily harm on those girls I really think I would! They are wretched people through and through. I wish there were live feeds of the sequester house. I want to see James torture Jen.
Posted by kimberly on 09/08/05 at 12:19 PMUm, what’s a DVR?
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 12:19 PMIs it possible yet to watch TV shows that have not yet aired? Or been produced?
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 12:27 PMDVR - digital video recorder. Basically, the cable box acts like a combination VCR/computer hard drive and will record whatever shows you program it to record. The show data is stored on the DVR memory and you either erase the show after watching it or you can download it to a VHS tape if you want to keep it. Pretty nifty.
And no, you can’t view anything newer than new unless it’s actually on TV. It’s not quite that magical.
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 01:48 PMFound it! This article is so Jen, and I couldn’t remember which of the many TV lists I run I posted it to, but I finally unearthed it.
A few seconds later…
Well, your comments won’t let me post a URL, so I’ll email it to you
Posted by Ith on 09/08/05 at 02:07 PMSo will “For TV and for no TV” be in y’all’s vows?
I’m looking at your list there and thinking, “Holy crap that’s a lot of TV.”
But if I were single and had cable, my list would probably be twice that long. Here’s what we’re watching this fall:
1. The OC
2. Amazing Race
3. Lost
4. The Office
and of course lots and lots of football. We’re going to give “Invasion” a try too. Smallville is on probation. If the first couple of eps don’t grab us we’re dropping it like we did CSI after its second season.
I’m a little miffed not to see “Scrubs” on the Fall TV schedule. I’m hoping that means it’s coming after the new year.
Posted by Jared on 09/08/05 at 02:14 PM“The cable box?”
In order to have a DVR, would I first have to have cable? My husband wants (badly) a satellite dish (we don’t get cable in our neighborhood)...we’ve got the reverse of you and Beau going on at our house...at least I have my own TV, but it’s dusty. Would we then need a “DVR/Tivo thingie” to do what you’re talking about? Will I need to hire a tech support guy to be on staff at the house 24/7?
What’s the difference between DVR and Tivo?
Did you ever think you’d find yourself “ministering” to someone about TV?
Thanks, Jen!
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 02:15 PMJared, yes it is a lot of TV. However, I have to sit on the sofa making bead stems for my bouquets every night and so the TV is going to keep me from going insane.
I have little doubt that marriage will greatly modify my TV habit.
Gwynne, yes and no. You do have to have some sort of access to either cable or satellite to get the best quality recording. If you’re opting for satellite, then ask them about the DVR option - most companies are offering bundled packages. Just know that if you want to be able to record two shows at the same time you will need to tell the company that. There are some lower-end DVRs that will only record one show at a time.
DVR = Tivo. Tivo is a private company that sells DVRs and their own subscription service. I have both the cable company’s DVR/cable box combo and a Tivo. There are bennies to either, but they both do basically the same thing.
There is a learning curve to the technology, but once you get the hang of it you will never go back to the old way of watching TV. For the rewind and pause features alone, I was able to convince my parents to get one.
I’m not sure how I feel about calling this a ministry, but I’m happy to help.
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 02:30 PMGwynne, I got one of those packages. With DishNetwork, I get the satellite, the DVR that works like a TIVO does, and a choice of channel packages. I got hooked using my parents’ one in Utah. I had planned on buying a stand alone DVR/DVD burner that used the TV Guide listings for programming, but I could never come up with the cash. This way, I just pay a rental fee for the DVR/Tuner just like I pay the cable company now for my digital cable box.
Posted by Ith on 09/08/05 at 03:08 PMUh, oh...I can sense the “dark side” looming just over the horizon. Thanks Jen and Ith!
Ith, did you shop around much on the satellite service? I’ve no idea which one to go with, but we keep getting telemarketing calls. It’s like my husband is leaving little notes saying “help me!” everywhere he goes. Poor guy!
Posted by on 09/08/05 at 03:22 PMI looked at Dish and DirectTV. Dish came out the winner for me. They seemed to have more options and more of what I wanted technology wise. Their website is pretty comprehensive, and I ordered it all online.
Posted by Ith on 09/08/05 at 03:47 PMWe have several that overlap. I posted my list a day ago or so.
Maybe Beau will help temper the TV watching. Find a nice middle ground.
TiVo rocks.
