Election Day as Holiday?

So Sen. Obama proposes that folks take the day off to go vote. Others suggest that the day be a national holiday.

I say no way to both.

There is no need to take the whole day off to go vote. The longest I stood in line to vote ever was maybe 2 hours. Usually I get in and out in about 30 minutes. As for the holiday idea, that’s ridiculous - half of the people don’t even bother to vote, so they would get a free day off and that just hurts the economy.

If you want to vote, get off your lazy butt and go vote.

  1. And for others it takes eight hours of waiting in line to vote. Make it a national holiday and give back Presidents’ Day.

  2. I do agree with the “give back President’s Day”...give us back the original intention of the holiday, to honor Washington and Lincoln only.

  3. You can’t give back one holiday and get two back. Not these days. We ended up with one President’s Day because of the addition of MLK Day. I don’t quibble about that, but I’ll fight tooth and nail over an Election Day holiday. That idea is ridiculous.

  4. I just had another one of my BRILLIANT ideas! Having Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11 is a relic of World War I. I say there’s no better way to honor our veterans than by exercising the rights for which they’ve fought.

Ergo, move Veteran’s Day to the first Tuesday in November. Problem solved.

The wisdom of Solomon just *oozes* from my brain. lol

  5. I like that idea but instead of Veteran’s Day,I think we should vote just before Independence Day. Then, only those who vote get to celebrate the 4th of July.

Or, why not use the absentee ballot?

  6. As a veteran, I say “Hands off Veteran’s Day. WWI or not, it’s the one day in the year when the military folks actually get some recognition. They have morphed Memorial Day into “soldiers, firefighters, first responders, anybody who we left out” day, so leave Veteran’s day alone.

I’m with Jen. Just vote. If you don’t want to wait X hours, don’t vote. Your call. It’s a small enough service to your country to stand in a line. If you want to take the day as vacation, go ahead. If you don’t get vacation and want the day off, take a day without pay.

  7. Why don’t we nationalize the way we vote so every state votes the same way. Let’s let everyone vote early, regardless of your age or situation or state you live in. Let everyone vote by mail in so they never have to go to a polling place. Have the vote go on for two or three months, end it on Election Day, no waiting in lines unless you want to wait in line for a donut somewhere. While we’re at it, let’s get all of the states to hold their primary on one day as well. No more of this primary race dragging out for two years. What a drag.

  8. How about we not nationalize every little thing. The federal government already screws up the many things it have control over. Enough already.

I’m with Dad on the Veteran’s Day thing - our military gets little national recognition for their service and sacrifice. It’s a really bad idea to muddy that day up with the craziness of politics.
