  1. To take nothing away from McCain’s time spent in captivity, there is something to the fact that it takes more than being a POW to claim to be the heir to the title Commander in Chief.

And there is still a divide between women and men in this country, blacks and whites, no getting around that.

But we have a unificator leading this country, it’s all good. Can anyone say the words President and Bush side by side with a straight face these days?

  2. I agree that having been a POW doesn’t automatically qualify you for the Presidency. But I do not agree that a female POW would be questioned in that manner. Jessica Lynch wasn’t and she didn’t spend nearly the time in captivity that McCain did. And her treatment by the media and the American people was far, far better than McCain and the other Vietnam POWs got. They were treated as pariah.

  3. There is so much more that qualifies John McCain to be Commander-in-Chief.  Steinham minimized (and insulted) his accomplishments by saying that he was just trained “to kill people.” No, he was brought up in a military family, his dad and grandfather both being Admirals, where the tradition of service to country was a given, not for personal gain but for love of country and patriotism. He was trained in military history and strategy, combat operations, navigation, to fly airplanes, to obey his commanding officers, to face his captors with steeled resolve that enabled him to courageously defy them for over five years, to be a base commander, managing hundreds of people, and most importantly, to defend his country. He is supremely qualified, more than most, to be our Commander-in-Chief.  Dad could say all of this so much better than I but, as far as I am concerned, Gloria S., Obama and Hillary don’t even qualify to clean John McCain’s boots.

  4. Denis, I won’t dignify her comments about John McCain until she has spent 5.5 hears in a Vietnamese POW camp and comes home to face hostility. On her other topic, I know facts really bother Democrats, but here are some to ponder:

    State Governors
    Female: 8
    African American: 1

    Members of Congress
    Female: 74
    African American: 42

    Senators
    Female: 16
    African American: 1 (Obama)

    Supreme Court Justices
    Female: 1
    African American: 1

Gloria is, as usual, full of crap (like most liberals, actually) when she says it’s harder to be a woman than a black.

And yes, I can say President Bush with not just a straight face, but pride that he stood (and stands) up to the terrorists with whom our good Dumbocrats want to talk (or just surrender).

Speak softly and carry a big stick. Good advice then, good advice now.

  5. State Governors
    Female: 8
    Male: 42
    African American: 1
    Non-African-American: 49

    Members of Congress
    Female: 74
    Male: 361
    African American: 42
    Non-African-American: 393

    Senators
    Female: 16
    Male: 84
    African American: 1 (Obama)
    Non-African-American: 99

    Supreme Court Justices
    Female: 1
    Male: 8
    African American: 1
    Non-African-American: 8

    Your point being?

  6. Point being that unlike the asinine comments from Ms. Steinem, it is easier to get elected as a woman than as a black, as the oh-so-inconvenient-facts show. (Just in case you didn’t actually read the article referenced by Jake Tapper, it reported, “She [Steinem] penned a January op-ed for The New York Times backing Clinton and asserting that “gender is probably the most restricting force in American life.” “ Turns out, surprise, the old biddy was wrong, and that race is still the more restricting. Nothing to be proud of in that, but if she’s going on the attack path for her gal, she’d do well to occasionally check the facts.

  7. Okay. I gotcha. I guess my point was it still pays to be a white male in politics. I couldn’t care less what driffle Gloria Steinem writes.

I’ll take either a woman or an African-American this time around. But it should make for an interesting few months leading up to November. Watch out for mud slinging.
