Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This post is from Saturday, but I moved it up for anyone who missed seeing it then.

So Beau and I went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yesterday. I have one word to describe it - weird. And brilliant. And demented. And wonderful. I loved it, although I think that while Beau enjoyed it, his feelings on it are less enthusiastic.

Tim Burton is an oddball. But he has such creativity and it’s why his movies are mostly successful - especially his more whimsical movies like Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish.

Johnny Depp is a great actor. And I mean he is a great actor - he will go down as one of the most versatile actors of this generation. He is such a chameleon and I like him in everything I see. As Willy Wonka he is weird, charming, interesting, and heart-breaking.

The oompa-loompas - hilarious and the songs were fantastic.

Fun movie, probably not suitable for younger kids. I give this one 4 stars out of 5.

  1. Wouldn’t that be 4 oompa-loompas out of 5?

  5. Jen, you can steal my thunder. No biggie.  I gave “Charlie” 4 1/2 glass elevators out of five.

  8. Back from the movies.  Odd and demented, yes.  But we all enjoyed very much!  I’d say there were about oh, 50, 60 oompa loompas out of 1.wink And I kept waiting for the familiar oompa loompa song that never arrived, but was not disappointed by this latest incarnation of one of my favorite childhood books (loved the oompa loompa dance numbers, almost as much as Napoleon’s dance montage).  And though I enjoy Johnny Depp’s chameleonism, he also disturbs me...maybe it’s the make-up.  My daughter tells me that he’s the only man who can pull this off. whatever

There will be many good quotes coming from this movie.  I’ve already used a few in everyday conversation...like “I WANT A SQUIRREL, DADDY!”

  11. You know, one of your thon posts was about which celebrity reminded you most of Beau, and I have to say that as I watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie reminded me a lot of Beau.  smile

And speaking of the chameleon, my girls watched Finding Neverland last night, and you would never guess it was the same actor in both movies.  headscratch

  12. Gwynne, I’ll take that as a compliment.  There does seem to be something heavenly about enjoying a family in a world of chocolate and sweets.  But hey, where’s Charlie’s, and Willy’s sweetie?

  13. It was intended as a compliment (most apparent at the point where Charlie had to choose between a HUGE chocolate factory all to himself, or his family).  But Charlie’s a bit young to have a sweetie yet (clearly, he had no interest in either of the spoiled brats that accompanied him...his sweetie is waiting for him).  And Willy?  Well, that guy scared me!  No sweetie for him.  fie

  14. Loved the movie and even the kids liked it, they watch the original the next day and said the liked the new one better.  I liked the oompa loompa’s and their songs better in the first one, but I will have to watch the new one a couple more times before I really say they are better.
