Broadway: Spamalot
I don’t have a category for theatre, but because Spamalot is based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I’ve listed it under Movies Schmoovies.
Silly. Hilarious. Offensive. Brilliant. Weird. Classic.
This is a PG-13 show, so do not plan on taking the younger kiddies to see this show. Lots of use of Jesus’ name as an epithet. Lots of things to offend just about everyone. Pure silliness, which is vintage Python. Brilliant actors/singers - David Hyde Pierce and Hank Azaria were awesome. Simon Russell Beale was fantastic as King Arthur (he took over the role from Tim Curry).
Azaria is a quick improvisor and managed to break up his castmates a couple of times with timely snark. He made a Cheney joke that had the whole audience cracking up. I didn’t laugh out loud, but I appreciate the quick wit.
Anyway, a clever show and if you’re a Monty Python fan then you will not be disappointed. There are the Knights of Ni, rabbits, French people, and cows.
Thanks to The Cooties for a fun weekend and a fun and memorable wedding gift!
I’m glad you enjoyed yourselves! Was Beau prepared for this one (i.e. had he ever seen the movie)? I love the movie version…I often watch this while on the treadmill to take my mind completely off what I’m doing. It never fails to crack me up. How did they handle the scene where King Arthur amputates all of the Black Knight’s limbs?

Posted by beth on 02/20/06 at 10:02 PMGwynne, that scene with the Black Knight was REALLY well done and hilarious.
Posted by Jaynee on 02/20/06 at 10:12 PMAnd now Beth gets to see it too? :teary:
Okay, here’s a Which Is Better question for you, Madame Budget Finance (and Dr. Beau). I see that Spamalot is going to Chicago right after tax season when we will likely be visiting that Windy City. If we have to choose between Spamalot or Delirium (the Cirque show) because of our limited theatre budget, which should we choose?
Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 02/20/06 at 10:42 PMGwynne - Spamalot, for sure. If you’ve seen one Cirque you’ve seen them all. There’s only one Spamalot - Cirque will come to your town again.
Posted by Jaynee on 02/21/06 at 11:36 AMGwynne, I’d probably vote for Spamalot too - but more from the “If-you-don’t-see-Circque- in-Vegas-you-really-haven’t-seen-Circque” perspective. Of course, I’ve only seen it on Vegas and on TV - which is admittedly going to be worse than anywhere else live. So take it with a sandbag of salt.
Tough choice though, I don’t envy you!
Posted by beth on 02/21/06 at 11:42 AMOh, I was going to say Cirque, but they make a good point about one Cirque being all. Spamalot is unique as far as theatre goes.
Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 02/21/06 at 12:04 PMYeah, I think Vegas (much as I despise the place) is the place to see Cirque. I’ve only seen a modified, trimmed down imitation (and not in Vegas), so I do really want to see the “real” version someday, but I think we’ll shoot for Spamalot in Chicago (of course, the only place to see this is Broadway, I suppose, but some of us aren’t as fortunate as you).
Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 02/21/06 at 12:25 PMBased on y’all’s recommendations, we now have tickets to see Spamalot in Chicago…this better be good!! :jumpy:
They weren’t cheap, but in case anyone else is interested, there’s a $100 discount at ticketsnow dot com, just for applying for an AMEX card. That helps!
