Battling Dogs and I’m the Loser
ECD and Holly are away for the week for Holly’s spring break. I’m at home alone with Annie, Sassy, Mr. Kitty, Paulie & Lupe (the parakeets), and Sugar (the hamster). All animals are coping well with just one human around rather than three. Mr. Kitty has meeped at me a bit more - I think he’s lonely without humans in his part of the house. He could remedy that if he would venture downstairs, but he isn’t ready to face Annie in her habitat yet. However, they actually played around a bit last night while I put together a quick dinner. I was a bit shocked.
The more evident problem is the dogs. Both love their humans and both are insanely jealous. Sassy is a very affectionate pup and loves to lounge in my lap since her humans aren’t around. Annie doesn’t like to share her human. And so there has been much snarling and growling but, fortunately, no actual dog fights.
It’s amusing to watch them steal one another’s chew toys. Sassy will drag one out of the basket and play with it for a bit. Then she will leave it for a second and Annie will snatch it for herself. Back and forth they went.
Bedtime has been an adventure. Annie sleeps on the bed with me and Sassy sleeps on the bed with ECD. Naturally, Sassy wants to be with me since her human is away. I’ve got no problem with that, but Annie does. For the past three nights, I’ve put Annie on the bed first (she needs assistance getting up there) and then she growls and barks while I get Sassy on the bed. They circle around each other until I get in bed and then, as if by magic, they move to separate corners - one on each side of me and pressed up against me and I end up sleeping in the same position all night, diagonally across the bed.
I’m happy it isn’t summer because that would get hot and I’d be miserable. As it is, last night wasn’t that great because we all seemed to be restless and moving about. This resulted in constant growling from both dogs as they maneuvered around my tossing and turning while trying to avoid each other. At one point, Sassy went under the bed, but she wanted back up at about 3:30am. Sadly, she wasn’t able to hop up in the dark and I had to turn on the light.
I’m a little weary today. And I’m determined that we will sleep in peace tonight - both dogs will get the boot if necessary.
Too funny. Spanky got on the bed around 5am this morning but only stay a few minutes. She hasn’t slept with us in weeks.

Posted by Craig on 03/24/05 at 12:02 PMWhenever my wife leaves town all four dogs tend to cling to me like crazy. This is particularly true at bedtime—I’ll have four Samoyeds ranging in weight from 50 to 70 lb. on the bed with me. Pretty darned cuddly, let me tell you.
This is jockeying for pecking order status. It tends to abate after a few days.
Posted by Dave Schuler on 03/24/05 at 12:27 PMMom, the only saving grace is that Mr. Kitty hasn’t joined the party. With him trying to sleep on my face added to the mix I’d get no sleep.
Craig, great list of rules.
Dave, wow, four Samoyeds. That’s a lot of dog in one bed.
Posted by on 03/24/05 at 03:00 PMTry having two humans and four cats in the bed. Talk about sleeping in a pretzel position.
And then when a kid is sick it’s three humans and four cats.
And occasionally it’s two humans, one cat and a more-than-medium-sized dog.
Better still - three humans, two cats and one dog.
We’ve had all of those at one time or another.
I think our bed would break if we ever went for the four humans, four cats and one dog route…
