Annie: The End

Today marks the end of the 16 year adventure that was life with Annie. We’re taking her in to be put down this afternoon.

I won’t bore you with the whole long story, but after much thought, discussion with my parents (who have had to put down several dogs in their 40 year tenure as pet owners), and tears the decision was made this weekend. It’s time.

I’m sad.

[UPDATE 3:30pm]: Beau took her since I’m still so ill and also trying to work at home today.  Thanks for the virtual hugs and real prayers. Quite a few tears have been shed today. She was a good old dog and I’m going to miss her. Anyway, Beau said the vet was kind enough to give her a sedative first, so he petted her while she drifted off to sleep and then stayed with her while the final shot was given. He said it was very peaceful. I’m glad for that at least.

  5. So sorry to hear this, Jen.  We had to make the same decision for Prince in September 2006.  As the anesthesia kicked in and his pain went away, he returned to the happy loving dog we had known before he had cancer.  We hadn’t realized just how much pain he was in.  It was the right decision.  We still love and miss him, and I’m crying right now, 2 years later, thinking about him.  But I’m sure you’re making the right decision about Annie, too.  It will hurt your heart, but that’s only because you love her.

  7. Oh, Jen, this makes me cry and yet, I agree it is the right thing to do.  We are sooo close to making this same decision for Smokey.  Every night, I pray the decision will be made for us and we’ll wake to find he’s drifted off across the Rainbow Bridge.  Hugs and prayers to you and Annie.

  8. Aw, Jen, I’m so sad for you. It’s so very hard to say goodbye, even when you know it’s for the best. May the Lord comfort you with the knowledge that Annie is at peace.

  9. I am so sorry.  It’s a terrible decision to make, but we owe our friends that kindness when the time comes.

  10. So sorry to hear that. I’m sure you are making the right decision. I’m sure it was not one you made lightly. Annie is a great dog and you will have many many memories to treasure. I’m not a dog person, but you have me weepy right now too. I’ll make sure Olivia and I say a prayer for you tonight.

  12. John Henry and I are so sad for your loss.  I weep with you tonight.  I thank God for Beau being there to do the hard part.  God Bless Annie…

She is probably playing with Harry right now.

  13. I’m really sorry Jen, Annie was a part of your life for a long time and no one can take that away from you.  Bless Beau for being with her at the end.  I’m pretty sure my Kayla was there at the Bridge to welcome her with a good butt sniff!

  14. I still have vivid memories of when we had to put my grandmother’s dog whom we had to put to sleep 11 years ago. I won’t bore you with the details, but I do know how difficult the decision is.

The important thing is that your love for Annie will be part of you always.

  19. In some ways, this gave me the strength I needed this weekend to do what we had to do with one of our beloved pets, but not the one we expected.  There is strength in shared experiences, to be sure.  Bless you again.
