Roy Scheider, RIP
Roy Scheider died yesterday after a long battle with cancer.
He was in a lot of movies, but for me he’ll always be Police Chief Martin Brody in Jaws.

I Heart Jerry O’Connell
Parody is great.
[LATER]: Bonus Wacko Tom.
[LATERER]: The full original clip with subtitled explanations of what Tom is really saying about Scientology and what the cult is really all about. Illuminating.

Heath Ledger - Dead
NEW YORK — Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in what authorities say is a possible drug-related death, the NYPD said. He was 28.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The Associated Press that Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment that is believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there, and found him dead at 3:26 p.m, Browne said.
The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain,” where he met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005. Ledger and Williams had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.
Ledger’s roles include the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in “Monster’s Ball” and had starring roles in “A Knight’s Tale” and “The Patriot.” He was to appear as the Joker this year in “The Dark Night,” a sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins.”
Shocking.

On TeeVee
I am one of many millions who takes perverse glee at this bit of news from the weekend. It’s 12 years too late and for the wrong crime, but hey, they got Capone on tax evasion so whatever it takes to get justice and all that.
Not too many years ago I would spend hours watching the red carpet shows of the Oscars and Emmys and then stay up way too late watching the bloated award shows themselves. No longer. I love my TV, but I don’t love the award shows anymore - the narcissism, the shallowness and hollowness of it all - not interested. I was flipping through the channels last night while holding a sleeping Jesse when I happened upon the Emmys at the moment when that chick from Grey’s Anatomy, which I don’t watch, won for best supporting actress. The camera cut to her after her name was announced and the first thing she said had to be bleeped. There she was, a beautiful blond in a gorgeous dress and sparkling gems, looking like an elegant and classy lady, but her mouth didn’t match the image. I flipped away, but ended up back again when the surfing rounds brought me back to that channel and I heard more bleeping and profanity that wasn’t bleeped. Nice. And then this morning I heard the clip of Sally Field’s rant, in which she also got bleeped, and I wonder what is wrong with people that the only words they can think of when they’re giving a speech on live television is profanity? And nevermind the politics. You’d think actors would get the clue that the average American doesn’t give a flying fig what they think about the war or the President or whatever in politics. Shut up and act or sing or whatever it is you do. I don’t care what you think about the war! Sheesh.

Hollowood: Crazy Baldwin’s Phone Rant
Yes, Alec was terrible to say those things to his daughter via voice mail.
However, what kind of mother would let those things be released in the public square for all to hear? Bad form, Kim.

Maher/Affleck - KO’d
Newsbusters features a bit of the debate between Danielle Pletka, Ben Affleck, and Bill Maher on Maher’s HBO show from the weekend. My favorite chuckle:
… the host brought up the report last week claiming that 655,000 Iraqis have been killed since the start of the war. Pletka, smelling blood, went for the KO:
From left to right, people who understand about doing these sorts of studies agree that thing is horse manure if I can say that on cable TV. It is absolute rubbish. (side chatter) I’m sorry, my children are watching. Seriously speaking, you can say that people have died…
Maher: Whatever…
Pletka: No, no, it’s not whatever. You’ve got to remember that a million people have died under Saddam Hussein…
Maher: Excuse me kids, but stop watching…what ass did you pull that out of?
Pletka: I pulled that out of the U.N. ass.
[via wizbang]
[LATER]: I just watched the video after posting this. It’s great - she’s great. What was even better was the scathing look she gave Maher after the “UN ass” comment. Fantastic.

The Path to 9/11
What Steve Llama said goes for me, too.
I’m disgusted with the whole thing at this point - the hypocrisy of the Left knows no bounds.

Those Singing Chickens
Ith makes a great point about the Dixie Chicks latest attempt to sell more CDs.
I may just gather up the 3 CDs of theirs that I did buy and just mail them back to them. I don’t need the refund, but I don’t need the music anymore either.

Weird Dream
I don’t usually remember my dreams, but I’ve been sleeping fitfully lately - probably in part because of the reintroduction of caffeine and sugar to my diet now that I’m no longer pregnant. I woke up this morning chuckling at the bizarro dream I had that included Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and Nicole Kidman. Somehow, I played the role of Nicole Kidman and I was trying desperately to run away from Tom to get to Katie to get her away from Tom before she has to give birth in the Scientology-mandated silent method. I managed to get away from Tom, but he was ruthless in his pursuit to keep me away from Katie. I never actually saw Katie, just knew that I was trying to get to her.
Psych majors aren’t needed for this dream interpretation - clearly it’s sort of related to my own loss of the pregnancy and I think it stemmed out of a segment on the Glenn Beck radio show yesterday where he talked at length about the kookiness of the Scientology rules for delivering babies in silence and Tom’s insistence that Katie abide by those rules when she delivers their spawn. Also I’m convinced that Katie has been brainwashed by this cult and is being kept in seclusion from her family and any other normal people.
I probably should not have eaten that candy bar last night.
LATER: The picture in this post does not help matters. I think my eyes are damaged for life. Gack!

Bones and the Bastardization of a Great Character
You know that new show coming to Fox this fall called Bones? Just based on the promos I’ve seen, I’m a little miffed.
1. The website tagline says, “Inspired by the life of forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs.” Normally, I’d say Woo!, but that’s wrong. The show is based on the character Reichs created in her novels (Dr. Temperance Brennan) who is based on her own life. Nit-picky? Yes.
I love Reichs’ novels. I think Dr. Brennan is a strong and interesing character. Where I quibble with the producers of the show is that they’re taking the character that Reichs created and putting her into an alternate world from where she lives in the novels. In the novels, Tempe divides her time between Charlotte and Montreal. I’m assuming that Tempe in TV-land will be in the US only given the prominence of the FBI with the casting of David Boreanaz as the male lead. In the novels the male lead is a Canadian detective.
2. My other point of contention is the TV-land Tempe’s age. Played by Emily Deschanel, who was born in 1978, TV Tempe is going to be much younger than Novel Tempe. Actually, TV Tempe is more like Novel Tempe’s daughter’s age. Wait, she has a daughter in Novel-land? And an ex-husband!
Why couldn’t the producers have stuck to the formula with which Reichs found success? I like the 40-ish Tempe with the college age daughter, ex-husband, Canadian cop boyfriend, and two locales she calls home. Don’t tell me that women over 40 aren’t available to take on the role in Hollowood - there are quite a few I can think of that would have made great casting as Tempe.
So are my nits going to keep me from watching? Nope - I’m willing to give the show a whirl. But I’ll drop it like a hot potato if it turns out to be anything like Karen Sisco.
LATER: Updated to include the link from Reichs’ official website where I noted that she has

From Hollowood
First, I found out that the widow of Christopher Reeve, Dana Reeve is battling lung cancer. She never smoked.
Second, I learned that Marc Cohn, of Walking in Memphis fame, was shot in the head during an attempted carjacking on Sunday. He is alive and recovering in the hospital after being treated and released from the hospital.
Wow.
