At first I was a little perturbed, because to have secular people (which is how I think of those who aren’t spiritual (I hate the term religious)) name themselves “bright” gave the arrogant idea that those of us who are spiritual must not be bright. And that’s definitely a hot button for me - the idea that people of faith have checked their intellect at the door of the church to blindly follow God like idiotic lemmings. When in actual fact, many most people of faith (and I’m speaking mostly of Christians, since I am one and that’s my perspective on life and faith), especially the ones I know personally, are very smart and have used the brain that God gave them to critically think about what they believe, why they believe it, and how their beliefs fit into their world.
I’ve read in several places in the blogosphere a clear and distinctive disdain for Christians and yes, it bothers me. And I’m woman enough to admit that I’ve held similar disdain for those who don’t believe in God. For that I’m sorry, and I will try not to harbor that disdain again, because it’s insulting, unloving, and arrogant. And that is not how I, as a follower of Christ, am to be towards those who don’t follow Christ.
Because I’ve read a lot of comments from all perspectives at the blogs I linked. Some were joyous to find a niche with the Brights movement, some were outraged at the arrogance behind the movement, some engaged in debate about the veracity of God, some proclaimed their firm belief in God, etc. And what stood out to me was something I’ve known since I decided to follow Jesus - there are people who will reject him simply because they can’t find the proof that he is who he said he is, they’ll think he’s a fairy tale, a myth, legend, complete fiction.
One commenter even said that he considers the Bible to be fiction - no basis in truth - despite the fact that it’s been proven as an accurate historical document used by archeologists, historians, librarians; despite the fact that there are other historical records that back up the facts in the Bible. He has decided not to trust it’s veracity simply because it’s known as the Word of God. And so he’ll miss the Good News that’s embedded in it’s rich history, the love story, the Passion. And it makes me sad.
Some of these folks who have aligned themselves as Brights™ are atheists, agnostics, anti-theists, etc. Some are certain that God does not exist. Others don’t know if He exists. Still others are opposed to the idea of a despotic diety who rules arbitrarily from his lofty throne. And that makes me sad. And it brings me to my knees in prayer - because I believe they are missing out on the best part of life - faith and a reconciled relationship with the One who created them.
They’re so set on seeing things through logical, rational thought. They need proof - tangible, physical proof - that God exists. And God is more than physical. Yet He came in the tangible, physical form of Jesus. You can’t get more tangible and physical than a little baby, who grew into a man who bled and died. But Jesus was so much more than a man, he was also God. The powerful Creator who performed miracles and healed and raised the dead, including Himself.
I pray for those who don’t believe - that God would reveal Himself to them in real and amazing ways - so that they would have little doubt that He is, He loves, He wants to be a part of their lives so that they can have abundant life.
You can choose to believe what you want or not to believe anything at all. That’s the beauty of the free will that God gave you. And in this great country of ours, you have the freedom to believe what you want to believe. That’s the beauty of our Constitution.
I hope that those of you that read this who don’t believe, would consider taking another look at God, the Bible, Jesus. I challenge you to put aside your preconceived notions of who they are and to look at them with fresh eyes and heart.
If you are certain that God doesn’t exist, then nothing I can say will change your mind. But He might. If you don’t know whether or not God is real, then open your mind and heart to the possibility that He is. If you don’t like what you’ve been taught about God or how God could let this world be as it is, then read His Word. God said, “You will seek me and find Me when you seek me with all of your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
And if you have questions, ask them - here, send me an email, or at your local church. I don’t have all the answers, but I know the Source of the answers and I believe He is faithful to provide the answers that we need in order to better understand Him.
