When You Tell a Bad Joke…

..I won’t laugh. Well, you might get a pity laugh. But generally, if a joke is bad you’re not gonna get a laugh out of me. Sorry.

My boss just sort of told me that I have a sucky sense of humor because I react to his jokes like his wife does.

“What, she doesn’t laugh either?” I asked.

“No, she doesn’t. She gives me the same look that you do,” he said.

That made me laugh.

And then he asked me if I like Seinfeld, to which I replied, “But, of course!”

And he walked out looking confused.

It’s Called The Turn Signal

You know that lever that’s sticking out of the left side of your steering column? It’s kind of behind your steering wheel and sometimes your fingers might brush against it when you’re driving? Yeah, that’s called your turn signal. You push it down when you want to indicate that you’re going to turn left. You push it up when you want to indicate that you’re going to turn right. It’s a courtesy item you can should use for the other drivers with whom you share the road. Really, although you might think so, it’s exactly an optional item on your car. Nor should it be in your driving habits. Because while you know that you plan to get into the left turn lane right after you slam on your breaks, the cars behind you don’t and that little turn signal thingy is a huge help to those of us who are behind you on the road and would like a little advance notice of your intentions. See, it might keep those other drivers from inadvertently ramming their cars into your rear end. So start practicing now. Down = left. Up = right. It’s pretty simple.

The above mini-rant is the result of three drivers this morning that were in front of me who never used their turn signals and slammed on their breaks at the last minute to make turns. I managed to avoid three accidents this morning, which is a good thing since I have that new speeding ticket on my driving record already. And yes, I just paid the ticket off. I can’t be bothered with sitting in court.

TAR5 Week 11 Standings

It’s coming down to the wire - I’m really looking forward to the 2 hour finale next week.

Funniest line from a Racer EVER - “My ox is broken!” Hy-lar-ious.

I have more thoughts that I’ll add later.

UPDATE: Just for the record, TAR6 won’t start until late October or early November now. Not a bad idea really. As much as I love the show, a little breather won’t hurt.

My thoughts on last night’s episode are here ----->

Witticisms of Purpose

From Bryan comes this amusing link, that is especially so for me (and will be for my parents) as well.

As an added bonus, the prayer request/gossip line and the horoscope/personal prophetic word page.

I love that we Christians can mock ourselves.

Lame Church Sign #7

There was no lame church message last week - they used the space to advertise the new fall schedule and a music event. That’s actually what I believe those signs should be used for, but what do I know.

Anyway...this week’s slogan isn’t awful.

It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts

TWop TAR5 Week 10 Recap

I’m too tired to come up with a clever post title. I’m also too tired to wax philosophic about the funny TWoP recap of last week’s TAR episode.. I’m also too tired to excerpt. You know what to do.

One more hour until I can go home and crash. Whatever energy I had this morning is long gone and lunch didn’t help any. *yawn* I need some toothpicks to hold my eyelids open for my drive home.

Secondhand Lions

I’m way behind on my movie viewing from when CootieBoy was born. I finally got around to watching Secondhand Lions last night.

A coming-of-age story about a shy, young boy sent by his irresponsible mother to spend the summer with his wealthy, eccentric uncles in Texas.

I remember when the trailers came out for this movie last fall. I was very interested in seeing it because I’m a huge fan of Robert Duvall. I also really like Haley Joel Osment and Michael Caine.

Secondhand Lions is a sweet family movie that’s much more than I expected it to be - it’s touching and funny and adventurous. I love the old men. I love how they are with the boy. I love watching the boy flourish while he’s living with the old men.

I was impressed with Caine’s American south accent - I never noticed any flaws to it and I actually forgot it was Caine a few times. And Haley Joel Osment is still very cute and quite a good actor. I don’t need to say much about Duvall - ya’ll know he’s brilliant, right?

I highly recommend this movie. It’s rated PG and I think kids will enjoy it too.

New Cootiepie Pics

There are quite a few new pictures of CootieGirl at her photoblog. She’s getting so big, especially when compared to her little brother.

We’re OK

Hey, Robert! Ya know that IT issue I emailed you about? We’re OK according to my IT person here. We share a server hub on the overall network. Something about the DNS - otherwise we’d both be getting some serious error messages.

Thanks for the advice, Dad.

It’s still a little freaky, though.

Wearying Weekend

I’ve been busy and I’m not done yet.

Yesterday, I helped with a function at my church for the parents of our teens. We had some guest speakers in to share with them how to communicate better and have a better understanding of their teenagers’ spiritual development. It was great and I even took away some good stuff that I can use as a youth worker.

After that I went over to my parents’ house for my mother’s Open House. That was a great time, they had an amazing number of women come by to check out this tea thing. I spent most of my time in the kitchen, helping with the food and washing cups to keep up with the people. Mom and her partner sold a lot of stuff and are ready for a full season of workshops.

I got home from all of that at about 6pm and then faced the work I had brought home. I managed to eat a quick dinner and then did some work for about an hour. My eyes started to cross and my fingers wouldn’t cooperate on the keyboard, so I quit earlier than I had planned and just went to bed, exhausted.

I had asked for the weekend off of worship team duties, so I was able to hang out a home a little later and I did a little more work before I headed out for the 9:30am service at church. After church, we had a family baby shower for my cousin so we headed out for that. It was a lot of fun, but made for another long day (the Redskins game was featured prominently at the gathering because we all bleed burgundy and gold - Hail to the Redskins!) and I got home a little before 6pm. So I’m faced with trying to finish the work I brought home in the midst of an equal tiredness that I had last night or just finishing it at the office tomorrow with fresher eyes and hands. I’m going to at least try to get some of it done tonight. I just don’t know how much it’ll be.

Oh, and I managed to catch a little of the 9/11 remembrance stuff early this morning on cable. It’s amazing how much I’ve forgotten about that day that seeing the video brought back, including the tears and resolve. Most interesting was a clip of a woman on the street in NYC, covered in dust and teary-eyed. She looked into the camera and said something about how the animals who attacked us made a huge mistake and don’t understand the American people very well. She continued on that we will not allow something like this to stand and that we wouldn’t just sit and take it - not an exact quote, but words to that effect. How right she was.

Ground Zero: Eagles on Station

First Pass: Defenders of Washington

Click on the images for information about the artwork and the artist, Rick Herter. We have both prints in our office, signed by the artist and the pilots. They are amazing and generate a lot of comments from visitors.

UPDATED to add the link to the artist.
