The Perk-meister

There’s a promo running on E!, for True Hollywood Story (I’m too lazy to look for a link, sorry). The next victim profile is Katie Couric and there are two things that bug me about the ad:

1. It’s run way too often.
2. They ask, “Why does everyone love Katie Couric?”

And there’s a clip of Willard saying how much she hates to be called “perky.”

I have a news flash - I don’t love Katie Couric. I didn’t love her when I watched The Today Show (which I no longer do). I’ve always thought she was slightly annoying and a little too precious - it’s that perky thing. (I hate that as much as she does.)

I’m sure she’s a nice lady. I know she endured the sad loss of her husband and that she has done good work in educating people about his disease. She’s a reasonably good TV personality, I suppose. I just don’t care to see an ad for a gossipy show about her rise to fame and wealth five or six times in an hour.

S-l-o-w

My computer is running exceptionally slow this morning. Very aggravating.

Sorry for the complaint. Had to be vented.

LATER: Nothing that a little breakfast and a reboot couldn’t fix. Seems to be working fine now.

Friday 5 for the New Year

Today’s Friday Five:

What one thing are you most looking forward to . . .

1. ...today?

Leaving work, which has been excruciatingly boring.

2. ...over the next week?

My trip to The Happiest Place on Earth where I’ll get to hang out with some missed and beautiful friends with whom I labored in the cold, snowy Northeast for the Lord and Young Life.

3. ...this year?

No one thing. I can think of a couple of specifics that shall remain unspoken for the moment. I am looking forward to (with a little trepidation) the week in which I shall babysit CootieGirl while her parents are doing the southern B-B-Q tour in May.

4. ...over the next five years?

Seriously? I have no idea. Additional little Cootie children for me to dote on. Beyond that I can’t think of anything.

5. ...for the rest of your life?

I live it one day at a time. My one life goal is to hear my Lord say, “Well done,” when I arrive in heaven.

Ah, The Venom and Hatred

Many folks on the left hate President Bush with as much vehemence as many on the right hated President Clinton. Need proof?

RWN has the Ten Worst Quotes from Democratic Underground from 2003. My favorite:

    9) “Doesn’t a part of you wish that Queasy and Duh-day were alive?

I’ll admit they’re scum and rightfully so, but anything that lands as even more humiliation on W’s grotesque shrivelled face is that much the better.

It’s sad, really, that as despicable as they are, Saddam’s family seems to be the lesser of two evils when you compare them to the wretched little b*stard* occupying the White House and destroying America in the process...”—thermodynamic

    5) “The capture of Saddam is all fine and good, but does how does this help someone facing a bleak Christmas because they lost their job? How does this help someone with an illness who just lost their insurance coverage? How does this help someone who’s underemployed, working several jobs and struggling to pay the mortgage? It just don’t make me any money.”—bushwentawol [ed., this is the epitome of selfishness (or at the very least, small-mindedness - how many people in Iraq wouldn’t have faced Christmas at all if Hussein wasn’t deposed?]

The others are beauts, too. Go take a look.

Cheddar is Yummy

I think I’ve done the Cheddar X meme before. In any case:

1. How do you organize your music?

By genre. I’ve got my videos/DVDs organized alphabetically by title. Books are organized by author in the order of publishing (newest to oldest). CDs are strictly by genre and in no particular order, although artists are mostly together.

2. Do you have more online or more hard copy music?

Hard copy, for sure.

3. What are your three most favorite bands you found or heard of online?

Through my sister, who supplies me with MP3s - Smalltown Poets, Relient K, Train

And now some obvious questions.
4. What are your New Year’s resolutions, if any?

None really. I’m not a goal setter.

5. How did you do on your last year’s resolutions?

Perfect! Heh.

Irrationality in Iran

James at OTB links to an article about how Iran is criticizing US efforts to lend aid in the wake of that earthquake last week - we’re meddling apparently.

Hardliners in Iran’s government criticized U.S. relief efforts after the devastating earthquake that killed more than 30,000 people and flattened the ancient city of Bam, accusing Washington of trying to meddle in Tehran’s affairs.

The criticism came as the Bush administration considered sending Sen. Elizabeth Dole to Iran as part of a relief mission after the 6.6-magnitude quake, and asked President Mohammad Khatami whether Tehran would allow a Dole-led delegation, an administration official said Friday.

    [...]

Khatami has thanked Washington for its support but hardline clerics within the government expressed suspicion about the motives behind U.S. aid offers.

State radio, a mouthpiece for Iran’s clerics, on Friday charged that Bush had “once again demonstrated that America’s interfering and hostile policy against Iran has not altered at all.”

Sure, she is an American politician. Sure, we have a vested interest in lending aid not just to those affected by the earthquake but to those who seek political change in Iran. But they need to remember that Dole was the President of the American Red Cross - a relief organization. She seems to be a logical choice from among our politicians to send, no? Is it not possible to believe that we really only want to help the people devastated by the destruction of their city and the lost lives? As James aludes to in his post title - they need not bite the hand that’s feeding them.

Solo Jedi, No More

Seems like someone is tying the knot in a western town today.

I know two successful online couples, one of them being the Cooties, the other shall remain unidentified (unless he chooses to reveal that tidbit about himself). Until my sister met the man of her dreams in a chatroom 8 years ago, I was extremely skeptical about that kind of love match. Today, I think it’s fantastic that two people have bonded long distance and found that meeting face to face only increases the love they took the time to develop through what can seem like a cold communication method.

I pray that Jay and Deb have a happy day and beautiful life together. Congrats to you both!

The Norwegian Hobbit

I tuned in for the finale of World Idol last night to see where Kelly Clarkson landed. I was not surprised at all to see that Kurt Nilsen took the title of World Idol, with Kelly coming in a close second place.

Why, you ask?

Because I’ve had about 100 visitors over the last week who’ve come to my humble blog by searching on some combination of “kurt+nilsen+norwegian+hobbit+world+idol.” No searches on any other of the contestants (until today, where I had a hit on “heinz+winkler.")

So where do I rank on a search for Kurt Nilsen? On this particular search string, I’m 96th out of 610, and most of those sites are not in English.

Conspiracies

So I was just talking politics with a deputy of dubious veracity and he asked me what I thought about the South American massacres that occurred as a result of the Reagan presidency.

Huh?

Anyone know what he’s talking about?

Happy New Year

I’ve spent a quiet day at home on this holiday - a little bit lazy and a little bit productive.

Lazy: reading, napping, watching QEftSG (which I had never watched before - I have to admit that I love it!)…

Productive: laundry, cleaned the kitchen, put away the few Christmas things I had taken out, cleaned out clutter from the closet in the other bedroom, played with my camera…

I also spent some time online this morning looking at templates at other blogs - those who design and offer their work as linkware. I downloaded a couple that I liked, but I haven’t played around with them yet. Maybe tomorrow or Saturday.

I need a Photoshop class - actually, I am signed up for 8 classes at CompUSA through work, I’m going to try to finagle a Photoshop course that way because there are really only 6 that I needed (MS Access - 3 classes and MS Excel - 3 classes). That leaves classes open...anyway, I have the software and I can’t figure out how to use it. It’s a little frustrating.

Mom told me that it’s a little early for the Valentine’s look. I didn’t even consider this look as particularly Valentine-y - I just liked that particular background when I found it and have wanted to use it. I got tired of the snowflakes - too busy, even for me.

OK, enough rambling...how was your day?

OOPS: I forgot the link for QEftSG. It’s fixed now.
