Sometimes Politicians are Idiots

I know, it’s actually most of the time. Here’s a new example that I heard on the radio driving in to work this morning. I will try to research a link later.

Basically, Maryland has toyed with the HOV lane idea for the past several years. The idea has never passed a vote or a governor’s desk. (For those who don’t know, HOV = High Occupancy Vehicle aka carpool lanes.) IMHO, HOV lanes are stupid and don’t help traffic or pollution.

Anyway, the idea has been brought up again with a new twist - tolling the HOV lanes with higher tolls during peak hours to encourage carpoolers to drive outside of the heaviest traffic hours. So basically you’re screwing over the carpoolers, which makes no sense at all.

My dad and I had a long conversation about the uselessness of the HOV lanes. Maybe one day I’ll write our thoughts down and post them here.

LATER: Here’s the link.

I Had No Idea

Am I the last to hear that Jennifer Garner and her husband, Scott Foley are divorcing?

That makes me sad…they always looked so happy. Of course, they’re actors so maybe they were just acting happy.

Tax Cut or Not?

I’m watching Special Report with Brit Hume on Fox News and there was just a story about how the Democrats are criticising the President and GOP for not allowing their “tax cut” be a part of the one Bush just signed off on.

So here’s what their cut entails:

1. It’s a $400 child credit to the “working poor” - those who don’t make enough money to pay any Federal Income taxes.

Let me repeat that…they pay no federal income taxes. So this cut sounds more like a gift from the government to me, paid for by those of us who do pay income taxes.

2. The catch is that these folks do pay Payroll taxes (aka into the Social Security Trust FundTM) and so that’s how it qualifies as a tax cut. And the Dems claim that this would not be a tap on the SSTF.

Oh really? That’s exactly what it sounds like to me.

You are 22% geek
OK, so maybe you ain’t a geek. You do, at least, show a bit of interest in the world around you. Either that, or you have enough of a sense of humor to pick some of the sillier answers on the test. Regardless, you’re probably a pretty nifty, well-rounded person who gets along fine with people and can chat with just about anyone without fear of looking stupid or foolish or overly concerned with minutiae. God, I hate you.

VSD of Faramir

Lemonlye takes a page from Cassie and created a diary for Faramir.

Day 9: Sent postcard to Aragorn at Helm’s Deep. Suspect he will be v. jealous to see photo of me on beach with arm around Frodo and Sam. Haha - see what could happen if you’d wash your hair, King-boy?

Heh.

I Love Tom Servo Best

Lemonlye has a list of MST3K quotes. I was perusing her comments section where someone said they’re releasing MST3K on DVD!

What?!?!

I did some research and found that Satellite News (The Official MST3K Info Club Website) has a list of episodes already released on DVD. I had no idea! I think I have 8-10 VHS tapes of a several episodes.

Woo hoo! Something for the Christmas ListTM.

OK, I’m In

Since I would like to continue losing a little weight, I succumbed to the pressure to join the mtpolitics quest to shed blog-poundage. I just sent Craig my numbers.

One note to Craig, I think comparing guy-gal weight loss is not quite fair since guys typically lose easier than gals. I’m speaking generally, of course.

Oops!

Sometimes mistakes happen.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Mexican national may sue the U.S. government for selling him a car with a hidden load of marijuana, and then arresting him when he tried to cross the U.S.-Mexico border in it, a federal appeals court has ruled. [...] The appellate panel reinstated Cervantes’ negligence claims against the government for allegedly failing to find and remove the drugs from the car he purchased in July of 1999 at a U.S. Marshals Service Auction in San Diego, California. Four months earlier, the car was seized by the Immigration and Naturalization Service after it was used to transport illegal immigrants into the United States but agents apparently failed to notice 199 pounds of marijuana secreted in its bumpers, the court said.

I feel for this guy and someone definitely screwed up.

There are many people who handle the vehicles when they are seized and a contractor auction house does the actually selling of the property. So there were many, many hands and eyes that missed the drugs that were hidden on that car.

New on the Ecosystem

I’ve managed to move up to Flippery Fish since moving to the new blog address. Not too shabby. I’m not too interested in it really, unlike some folks. But I was curious how long it would take for me to move up from 0 links.

So thanks for linking to me!

Dreariness Continues

It’s raining again today. It’s miserable. And people are cranky.

Lord, please bring back the sunshine that we had on Monday? Please?

Does This Make My Gut Look Big?

In a follow-up from my earlier post, the posse of gentlemen (and now a couple ladies) is now working together to lose weight.

I’m debating joining in this contest. I’ve lost about 12 pounds since February (I had lost 15 before my trip to Georgia - I ate really well down there and managed to gain 3 back) without really trying and I could stand to lose a few more. I shouldn’t say “without really trying” - I cut back on sugar. Just that one thing helped me lose. Amazing.

But do I want to tell someone else my current weight? No one knows that number. I’ll have to think about this because it’s tempting to join that contest.

TV Viewing

I am sort of watching The Time Machine on HBO while working on the computer. This is a really bad movie.

Two thoughts:

1. There was a scene that looks a lot like a scene in The Lord of the Rings movies - where the Goblins/Orcs are in their caves creating the new creatures for Saruman. Lots of molten stuff flowing down chutes, sparks flying, etc.

2. Just had a scene with Jeremy Irons. He used to be a respected actor with chops. How has he been reduced to a bizarre role like this one? Ew.
